FOODIE Bucketlist

What this is are foods and recipes I have been dying to try and/or make. I am making a promise to try these before the end of 2017. Two things you learn about me in this blog post:

  1. I have no real health aspirations
  2. I have an incredible fascination with carnival foods

who even knew there was a food bucketlist but here it goes…

Poutine

source: halfbakedharvest.com
This dish reminds me of a disco fries which is a meal the cast of Jerseylicious always raved about and since then I have been wanting to try it. Poutine is a Canadian dish and just like disco fries, its main ingredients are fries, gravy and cheese. Even though these ingredients sound like hypertension in a bowl, I’m here for them. If you find yourself in Canada you can go ahead and order a McPoutine (because yes, that’s a thing), see more facts about poutine here 10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Poutine

Fried Wontons

source: dailycookingquest.com
Wontons are a Chinese dish, made from dough and usually have some filling inside. They have the same consistency as dumplings and are typically served in broth. I am not the biggest fan of dumplings so the idea of just a wonton did not appeal to me at all. But when I was perusing through Pinterest (like I usually do at 1 in the morning) I came across a recipe for fried wontons and I just knew I had to have them soon. I definitely don’t think I have the technique to fold them as good as other cooks so I will be looking for a Chinese delicacy restaurant where I can get them.

Cannolis

source: foodfolksandfun.net
Cannolis are Italian desserts that are made from hollow fried pastry  and have a cream filling. I spent a good 5 years of my life watching Buddy Valenstro in Cake Boss, Bakery Boss, Kitchen Boss and The Next Great Baker and I’m pretty sure for every 5 episodes I have watched, he has made or mentioned cannolis at least once. So me trying these is well overdue.

Koeksisters

source: okfoods.co.za
Yes I am South African. And no I have not had koeksisters. A koeksister is a dessert made from fried dough and is coated with syrup. I remember my grandmother always eating these but I never had the desire to try them. One time I ordered them from a baker as a gift for my grandma and I was prepared to try them until I realised they were coated with coconut, which for me is a No Bueno. Since that little incident some few years ago, I have not tried again but 2017 will the year I have a koeksister… (low key hoping my friends and family read this and buy them for me so I don’t have to spend money on something I will potentially dislike)

#funfact I learned about koeksisters from Clever News: it is actually pronounced koe-sister.

Churros

Churros are such staple fair foods and with the few times I have been to fairs I did not think to get one. Essentially churros are fried dough and are usually coated with cinnamon sugar. I think these will be fairly easy to make so I will try a recipe or two…

Funnel Cake Fries

source resources: littlethings.com
Funnel cake is another popular fair food (but to be honest, isn’t everything on this list) that is made from fried batter and is also usually cinnamon flavoured. It is poured through a funnel (thus its name) in a spiral motion and the funnel is what gives it its consistency. With funnel cake fries, however, you pour the batter into the oil in stripes instead of spirals.
